About

Crop and cropping systems in dryland ecology, horticulture, weed science, and pest and disease ecology.

History

The Department of Crop Science was established during the 2021/2022 academic session as one of the four founding departments of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources Management. The department trains students in agronomy, crop protection, horticulture, and dryland cropping systems, combining theoretical knowledge with practical field and laboratory experience in line with national and global best practice.

Philosophy

The department believes that sustainable food production in northern Nigeria requires a strong foundation in crop anatomy, agronomy, weed science, and crop protection. Its programmes integrate classroom learning with field experimentation, research methodology, and enterprise-based training to prepare graduates for contemporary challenges in food security and climate-smart agriculture.
